Administrative history. From medieval times the area was part of the Chorley township of the ancient parish of Wilmslow in the Macclesfield Hundred of Cheshire. Under the Poor Law Amendment Act Chorley became a civil parish in its own right. Alderley Edge civil parish was created on 31 December from part of Chorley civil parish. Macclesfield was a settlement in Domesday Book, in the hundred of Hamestan and the county of Cheshire. It had a recorded population of 4 households in , putting it in the smallest 20% of settlements recorded in Domesday.
